BRITDOC Films announces the Ping Pong Weekender, two days of Ping Pong fun and games at the Rich Mix in East London. Join us for an Olympic celebration at the Rich Mix on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August for screenings of Ping Pong and live screenings of the Olympic Games on the big screen.
Ping Pong has been exciting audiences up and down the country, with Empire describing it as “delightful, hilarious and completely inspirational.” The film follows Les D’Arcy who is a living legend. At 89 years old, he’s obviously not received the memo about slowing down, and is going for gold, literally. He’s headed to China to compete in the over 80s Table Tennis Championships in Inner Mongolia. A seven time world champion, he still lifts weights to train – something he’s been doing for decades, after surviving a sickly childhood. Of course compared to some, Les is a spring chicken. Australian legend Dorothy DeLow is 100, and finds herself a mega celebrity in this rarefied world. She’d better watch out though– Texan Lisa Modlich is fifteen years her junior and is determined to do what it takes to win her first gold. Director Hugh Hartford follows eight players from five countries, as they prepare to compete in this extraordinary sporting event that is as much about the tenacity of the human spirit as it is about taking home the title.
The Ping Pong Weekender is being co-hosted by social innovators Pongathon who will be organising fun and games around the 8 table tennis tables at the Rich Mix. Challenge yourself against the Pongbot, take on friends during a rally showdown, or simply get some new tips on perfecting an epic serve. After each screening of Ping Pong, we will have live coverage from the Olympic Table Tennis Quarter Finals on the big screen to make it a full day out for the family.
Daily screenings on the 4th and 5th August at 1pm and 5pm, with Ping Pong Table activity and Olympics coverage in the bar from 2pm – 9pm. Use of Table Tennis equipment free for all those with film screening ticket and there will be a Q+A with the filmmakers following each screening.
Tickets are £12 and available from http://www.richmix.org.uk/whats-on/festival/ping-pong-weekender/
